Our lower elementary assembly is designed for students in grades K-2. They’re already using their parents’ smartphones and tablets; they know how to load up YouTube and their favorite social and gaming apps. And they are starting to see sarcasm, meanness, and offensive language in comments and posts, while also growing in their ability to send texts and post pictures. We emphasize that technology use is a privilege, and not a right – and with that privilege comes certain responsibilities. The school, their parents, and their friends need them to be on board with treating others with respect – offline and online, and to speak up whenever they see someone mistreated, whether at school or in cyberspace. Students are also encouraged to keep embracing technology for all of the positives it provides, but also be wise, cautious, and kind to others while using it.
This presentation will help lower elementary school (grade K-2) students:
- Understand what apps, sites, and games kids their age are using and loving
- Learn how to identify and respond to cyberbullying
- Think about what motivates kids to be mean to each other
- Notice when a fellow student is being bullied or cyberbullied, so they can help
- Where to get help, and how to discuss it with adults
- Realize the importance of keeping passwords secret
- Understand how anything you upload, post, share, or send can’t be taken back
- Learn how to contribute to a positive, fun, and awesome school environment
